The Sweeney: Visiting Fireman (ITV 20 Sep 1976, with Nadim Sawalha)

Published

on

In Visiting Fireman Regan finds himself suspended after a drinking session with a villain who turns out to be one of the chief suspects in a major case. It just so happens that Regan is the one who gives him an alibi.

Meanwhile he is supposed to be liaising with visiting Turkish policeman Shebbeq who is investigating a possible insurance scam that saw five million dollars leaving his country illegally. Regan finds himself helping Shebbeq despite not being officially on duty. A convenient fire at the insurance company offices and a bomb planted in Regan’s car means that someone is more than keen to make sure that Shebbeq doesn’t get the info he needs. The always excellent Nadim Sawalha as visiting Inspector Shebbeq.

Something of a funny episode, it feels like it marks something of a turning point in the series. The great success of the series and the double act of Regan and Carter especially, sees them playing up to that knowledge. Not least in the Jimmy Durante themed song and dance routine the pair pull off in a drinking club. It’s great fun of course!

Although he has been mentioned fairly regularly Haskins has yet to be seen so far this season.
