JANE HALL

Showing: ITV1 Network July

Sarah Smart is turning herself into a major player these days with her dazzling turn in Funland and now the lead role in ITV1 new (thankfully non crime or medico related) comedy drama series Jane Hall. Written by Sally Wainwright (who was behind At Home With The Braithwaites) who actually spent 18 months as a London bus driver.

Jane Hall is a cute and decidely quirky show, Smart plays the eponymous Hall who leaves here middle class Huddersfield home to move to London and on a sudden impulse tries out for a job as a bus driver, much to her surprise she is successful and is soon thrown in at the deep end finding her new colleagues more than a handful - this is where the series real strength lies, the bus depot gang are a varied bunch, Mandy (Gillian Taylforth) who likes to play around even though her husband Dave (Robert Glenister) also works at the depot, theres also cheeky Steve (Noel Clarke of Dr Who) and the decidedly creepy Barry (Ian Reddington) who has it in for Jane. Jane's housemates also get a fair bit of the action with Jane having the hots for the flighty Richard and also stirring up emotions in gay Robert (Stephen 'Green Wing' Mangan).

Jane herself is something of a clutz, plain and shy but clearly with a confident sexy woman just dying to break out - this is demonstrated with the cute trick of Jane having an alter ego who pops up to pass comment on the action, this works well in the first couple of episodes but could end up being over used.

Jane Hall is definitely a fun show and is worth hopping on board with.
