A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM

UK / BBC ( BBC Television Shakespeare) / 1x111 minute episode / 13 December 1981

Play: William Shakespeare / Script Editor: David Snodin / Producer: Jonathan Miller / Design: David Myerscough-Jones / Costume Design: Amy Roberts / Music: Stephen Oliver / Choreography: Eleanor Fazan / Director: Elijah Moshinsky

Shakespeare's lyrical tale of life in the Forest of Athen's with the King and Queen of the Fairies (Oberon and Titania) are linked by the wedding of Duke Thesus to a love triangle involving three young Athenians (Lysander, Demetrius and Hermia). Helen Mirren is simply divine in her flowing diaphanous gowns as Titania, also excellent is old Citizen Smith himself but the legendary Brian Glover almost steals the show though as the donkey Puck. Gorgeous.

Helen Mirren as Titania / Peter McEnery as Oberon / Brian Glover as Bottom / Robert Lindsay as Lysander / Cherith Mellor as Helena / Nicky Henson as Demetrius / Estelle Kohler as Hippolyta / Nigel Davenport as Theseus / Pippa Guard as Hermia / Nat Jackley as Snout / Geoffrey Lumsden as Egeus / Hugh Quarshie as Philostrate / Ray Mort as Snug / Phil Daniels as Puck / Geoffrey Palmer as Quince / John Fowler as Flute / Don Estelle as Starveling / Bruce Savage as Peaseblossom / Massimo Mezzofanti as Cobweb / Dominic Martelli as Moth / Timothy Cross as Mustardseed / Tania Bennett, Alexandra Segal, Louise Mason and Lee MacDonald as Fairies
