DCI BANKS: AFTERMATH
UK / ITV1 Network – Left Bank Pictures / 2×60 minute episodes / Broadcast Monday 27 September – Monday 4 October 2010 @ 9.00pm
Writer: Robert Murphy / Novel: Peter Robinson / Production Design: Matt Gant / Director: James Hawes
In Aftermath Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks investigates when two young police constables are attacked during a domestic disturbance. One of them is killed but PC Janet Taylor is able to overwhelm the husband Marcus Payne. As Banks arrives on the scene, amidst a great deal of general mayhem it soon becomes obvious that Payne is the serial killer who has been behind the disappearance of several local women, one of whom is still missing. With Payne in custody Banks faces his hardest and most challenging case yet especially when Payne later dies.
Robinson, a Yorkshire man now living in Canada, has been writing the very excellent Banks police procedurals for some years now and it is great to see the character finally being brought to the screen, Aftermath is actually the twelfth book in the Banks series. Tompkinson is a good choice for the lead role too, maybe not quite world weary enough (in our mind he always seems a bit weather beaten, kind of like Alfred Burke in Public Eye. Hopefully this will be the first of many.
