Watching someone write a novel does not in general make for rock ‘n’ roll viewing but when the author is Ian Rankin you can be sure of a few surprises.

It’s now five years since Rankin decided to retire the character that made his name DI John Rebus and he is seemingly unsure of the direction to take next.

The documentary follows Ian from December 2011 when he is going through his story ideas through to June 2012 when he turns in his finished novel.

Mixing plentiful video diary style footage with contributions from the likes of Rankin’s wife Miranda Harvey and his editor Caroline Oakley.
