Period drama serial. During the mid nineteenth century 4 sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy, cope with life in New England whilst their father is away fighting in the civil war.

Quite a landmark production for a number of reasons, firstly it was the first fully fledged British TV serial (in fact it only went out in the South and the Midlands), it was also the first For The Children production – the BBC had only recently set in place a dedicated children’s department.
