Mr Axelford’s Angel (ITV 1974, Julia Foster, Michael Bryant)

Romantic comedy drama Mr Axelford’s Angel told the story of the wealthy but somewhat reclusive and self absorbed businessman Boris J Axelford who having just lost his secretary, (who walked out because, as she said “you still don’t know my first name. You’re totally disinterested. No humour, no warmth,”) had his life turned upside by the arrival of new temp Angel. Within 24 hours of meeting Angel he has proposed marriage – she turns him down of course but over the course of a week gets to know him somewhat better.

This light hearted piece was a major hit both in the UK and in the US (where it won an Emmy), it was also nominated for a couple of BAFTAS (one for Michael Bryant for Best Performance and one for Best Single Play – but losing out to Antony and Cleopatra). It actually starts quite shakily and with some over ambitious direction but it quickly finds its feet. A good hearted drama.
