THE BRITTAS EMPIRE

UK / BBC1 / 53x30m-e / 1991-97

Writers: Richard Fegan, Andrew Norris / Producer: Mike Stephens

Sitcom. The incredibly pedantic Gordon Brittas is the manager of the Whitbury Newtown leisure centre. Determined to make his centre the best in Britain Brittas is foiled at every turn by his own incompetence along with that of his mostly dopey staff. Only his second in command Laura (Julia St John) seems to know what she is doing. The Brittas Empire (which ran from 1991-97) marked Chris Barrie’s first attempt to breakaway from his Arnold Rimmer role on Red Dwarf.  The Brittas  Empire is reasonably funny but suffers from the lack of a likeable central character and some imbecilic supporting players.  Barrie is generally pretty good even though Brittas is not a million miles away from Arnold Rimmer.
