Creators: Richard Levinson, William Link / Executive Producers: Richard Levinson, William Link, Roland Kibbee, Dean Hargrove, Richard Alan Simmons
Crime drama series. Pretty
intelligent detective drama about dishevelled,
raincoat wearing, go it alone Lt Columbo.
Columbo had an unusual premise for a tec show,
we (the viewers) saw who committed the murder
right from the beginning with Lt Columbo somehow
always knowing who the guilty party was but
somehow having to use his skills and persistence
to work out how the deed was done.
Columbo was married to Kate but she was never
seen (although there was a cheeky spin off
called Mrs Columbo using this character).
Columbo drove a run down Peugeot and had a
basset hound called Dog.
Bing Crosby and Lee J. Cobb were both offered
the chance to play the role but the character
was actually first seen on screen played by
Arthur Freed in a 1961 edition of Sunday Mystery
Hour. Directors on the early editions included
both Steven Spielberg and Jonathan Demme.
Apparently the inspiration for the character was
Petrovich from Feodor Dostoyevsky's mammoth
novel Crime and Punishment

CONFIDENTIAL FOR WOMEN
USA / ABC / 13x30m-e / March 28, 1966-July8, 1966
Broadcast Mon.-Fri. 2-2:30 p.m.
Commentator: Dr. Theodore Isaac Rubin
Anthology series. Confidential for Women offered a week-long melodrama with observations on the playlet and its implications from
best-selling psychiatrist-author Dr. Rubin, whose case files
provided the germ for the stories. The opener dealt with a couple whose marriage was failing. Guest actors were a
mix of newcomers and old pros, such as Barbara Barrie, Joe Campanella, Kim Hunter, Darren
McGavin, Sheree North,
and Arthur O'Connell. Despite the presence of genial Jane Wyatt as hostess (whose sitcom Father Knows Best aired in
repeats daily on ABC 90 minutes before this show began), the serial had such little promise that ABC began a month
of reruns starting June 13, 1966 until its cancellation after 13 weeks. ABC replaced it with an arguably more accurate
picture of domestic life (see The Newlywed Game). Hosted by Jane Wyatt.
