Sitcom spin off from
Different Strokes focusing on the Drummond’s housekeeper Edna Garrett
who took up a new position as house mother at the Eastland School for
young women becoming something of a surrogate mum for the girls whose
ages ranged from 11 to 15. In 1983 the series underwent a complete
change of format, Edna having tired of the headmasters attitude towards
her decided to take up her sons offer of buying a store for her to run;
The gourmet food shop was called Edna’s Edibles – several of the
girls from the school also came along for the ride, in fact the series
was now more about the girls anyway, especially the heading into
adulthood Blair, Jo, Tootie and Natalie.
More changes came in 1985 with a fire and a make over for the shop, it
became a 1950’s style ice cream parlour and was renamed Over Our
Heads, the biggest change though occurred the following year with the
departure of Edna herself, getting married again and moving away – she
was replaced by her sister Beverly Ann and the series was now totally
focused on the girls. The final season saw wealthy Blair deciding to buy
Eastland
School
. George Clooney had a small recurring role for a couple of years from
1985-86, other familiar faces to turn up included Molly Ringwald and
Cloris Leachman.

FALCON CREST
CBS/Lorimar / 220x60m-e /
4 December 1981-
17 May 1990
Creator: Earl Hamner Jr /
Theme Music: Bill Conti
Drama series. Super soaper ala
Dallas
and Dynasty, prime time and full of all your classic soap ingredients.
Set in (fictictious) Tuscany Valley in the Napa Valley of San Francisco
the show focused on elderly Angela Channing who owned and ran the Falcon
Crest winery, initially Angela found herself in conflict with her nephew
Chase who had inherited 50 prime acres of vineyard from Anegla’s
brother (Chase’s father), in fact so upset was she that she was
determined to ruin him – the big finale of the 82-83 season was Chase
and his mother Jacqueline being shot (Jacqueline died) by Anegla’s
somewhat mentally disturbed daughter Julia. Other
key characters included Lance Cumson, Angela’s grandson and pretty bad
egg and the evil Richard Channing who co-owned newspaper The Globe with
Angela but wanted complete control. Storylines always tended towards the
sensational and violent with murders, bombings and organised crime all
regular visitors to
Tuscany
Valley
. In 1988 – horror of horrors – Angela lost control of Falcon Crest.
Angela spent most of the final season in a coma but recovered and
finally regained her beloved home and the series actually had proper
closure.

Drama series. Stories
of the kids and staff attending
New York
’s famous High School for Performing Arts. Key characters included
keyboardist Bruno , the ebullient singer/dancer
Coco
, Jewish writer/actress Doris, tough streetwise dancer Leroy, actor
Montgomery and the well off cellist Julie who found it hard fitting in.
The main teachers were dance teacher Lydia Grant, music teacher Mr
Sharofsky and drama teacher Mr Crandall. Every episode featured a couple
of generally good quality songs and routines and despite the fact that
the critics loved it the show failed to find an audience in the US and
NBC cancelled, however overseas was a different story, the UK especially
with huge audiences and the cast gaining hit records, NBC still didn’t
bring the show back but the producers took the show into first run
syndication. Based on the 1980 Alan Parker movie.

Reality show in which
former Fame star and professional choreographer Debbie Allen conducts a
nationwide search for performers age 16 and up across the country. After
a tough audition (you know that Lydia Grant, she never gave those kids
at the High School for Performing Arts a break) players enroll at an
intense boot camp at Debbie's Los Angeles dance academy. Mr. Shorofsky,
Miss Sherwood - are you around to give these new kids a pep talk? Coco,
Doris, Danny, Bruno, Leroy - where are you? The first time NBC used the
phrase "Must See TV" was in the 1982-83 season with its
Thursday night combination of Fame, Cheers, Taxi and Hill Street Blues.
Although the then one-and-a-half year old Fame got the axe at the end of
that season, the series was revived in first-run syndication from
