REALITY OF REALITY

Bravo / 5x60mins / 2003

Documentary series looking at the current spate of reality shows. These shows are manipulated entertainment, not straight documentaries. When there are casting directors, producers and camera operators every step of the way, how spontaneous can any of these dating/survival/bizarre living situation shows be? Some "scandals" of reality's recent history are rehashed for our short memories, like the time they used body doubles for an aerial shot in Survivor, and the lawsuit Ytossie and Taheed Watson filed against Temptation Island for kicking them off when producers knew all along the couple had a kid. But when the focus turns to more subtle ways these shows are shaped and molded, things get more interesting. Sometimes the cast has to re-enact scenes to get better camera angles. In the case of UPN's Manhunt, almost all of the contest was re-shot with a script. Other times, their "confessionals" are actually interviews, and producers will egg on other cast members by revealing what was said about them in these "intimate" talks. And if that doesn't heighten the drama enough, some out-of-context editing will do the trick.

Once upon a time Roseanne the sitcom was a "Must See" event on ABC, ranking in the top five in its first six seasons. And once upon a time, in the more recent past, Roseanne the syndicated talk show was a "Must Flee" catastrophe, prompting stations who signed up for two years to dump suddenly feel-good Roseanne into the wee hours of the morning. The Real Roseanne Roseanne was axed after four episodes.
