STARGATE SG-1

Showtime-MGM-Double Secret-Gekko / x60m-e / 1997-continuing

Creators/Executive Producers: Jonathan Glassner, Brad Wright / Co-Executive Producer: Richard Dean Anderson

Scifi drama series. A group of scientists discover a 'Stargate' that acts as a gateway to different parts of the universe. Based on the hit film of the same name and decidedly long running the biggest change for Stargate SG-1's was its sixth season move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? Whatever the behind-the-scenes politics, the departure of Daniel Jackson (actor Michael Shanks) the previous year most certainly contributed to the need to run a tighter ship somewhere. With the addition of his replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme) meant far more convolutedly involved story arcs and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when "The Changeling" saw Teal'c act out a life as a fireman. One reason for its being a fan favorite was the cameo from still-alive-after-all Daniel Jackson. There'd be several more through the year, culminating in a finale that relied on how much attention you'd been paying to that all-important back-story. Other kooky cameos included Dean Stockwell in one of the many spotlights on the energy resource n'quadria, Ian Buchanan as one of the devilish Replicators (and hopefully the end of that plotline), and regular spots from John DeLancie, Ronny Cox, and Tom McBeath as the Earth-bound series bad guys. More pertinently, we also saw The X-Files' Byers (Bruce Harwood) as a scientist involved with the Antarctic Gate.

With:- RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON as Colonel Jack O'Neill / MICHAEL SHANKS as Daniel Jackson (to season 5) / CHRISTOPHER JUDGE as Teal'c / AMANDA TAPPING as Captain Samantha Carter / DON S. DAVIS as General Hammond

Crime drama series. Los Angeles cops, junk food loving Dave Starsky and health food and yoga buff Ken Hutchinson work undercover to crack their cases amongst the cities low life. The ultra hip and happening Huggy Bear was regularly on hand to pass them information. Criticized for its high violence quotient the later episodes of the series tended towards the sentimental.

With:- PAUL MICHAEL GLASER as Dave Starsky / DAVID SOUL as Ken Hutchinson / ANTONIO FARGAS as Huggy Bear / BERNIE HAMILTON as Captain Harold Dobey

STAR TREK

NBC/Desilu/Norway/Paramount / 79x60m-e / 1966-69

Creator/Executive Producer: Gene Roddenberry / Music: Alexander Courage, Gerald Fried / Costume: William Ware Theiss

Conceived by Gene Roddenberry as a "Wagon Train To The Stars", Star Trek told the exploits of Captain James T Kirk and his crew travelling the galaxy in the warp-powered Starship Enterprise (NCC 1701). An initial pilot was made (Titled: The Cage) which starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. This was rejected by the networks yet they allowed a second pilot to be made which brought on board William Shatner. Leonard Nimoy as Mr Spock was the only character who was retained from the first pilot. The original pilot was never transmitted although footage from it was later used with new original framing material in a 2-part story entitled "The Menagerie". Dr McCoy came aboard in the first proper episode once the series started production. With its bold and colourful visual style and the superb performances of the regulars together with well-written and imaginative scripts set in a universe where any sci-fi concept you can think of can happen, it has become a television and science fiction classic - yet surprisingly at the time it was considered a relative failure and was cancelled after just 3 seasons. 10 years later it was reborn as a series of feature films with the same cast and since 1987 has spawned four follow-up television series set in the same universe:- STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1987-1993), STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE (1993-1999), STAR TREK: VOYAGER (1995-2001) and ENTERPRISE (2001-2005). There was also an animated series in the mid-70s.

The famous opening narration by Captain Kirk is as follows: "Space - the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, it's five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!"

With:- WILLIAM SHATNER as Capt James T Kirk / LEONARD NIMOY as Mr Spock / DEFOREST KELLEY as Dr Leonard 'Bones' McCoy / JAMES DOOHAN as Lt Cmdr Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott / GEORGE TAKEI as Lt Sulu / NICHELLE NICHOLS as Lt Uhura / WALTER KOENIG as Ensign Chekov (from S2) / MAJEL BARRETT as Nurse Christine Chapel / GRACE LEE WHITNEY as Yeoman Janice Rand (S1-six episodes only)
