WATCHING ELLIE

NBC / x30m-e / 2002 (First Episode: Tuesday 26 February / 8.30pm

Told in real time (minus commercials that's about 22 minutes per show) and without a laugh-track Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus playeds a Los Angeles night club singer coping with everyday hassles like her ex-boyfriend, current beau, odd neighbours and all-too-perfect younger sister. If you're thinking the Seinfeld curse (who isn't actually?) Watching Ellie is far more enjoyable and considerably more ambitious than The Michael Richards Show and Jason Alexander's Bob Patterson. Like the similar appeal Days and Nights of Molly Dodd (which moved to Lifetime in originals after two low-rated mini-seasons on NBC in 1987-88), Ellie is a real woman with real problems that viewers might (unfortunately) find unappealing given the non-traditional look of the series. And that's probably why NBC didn't schedule Watching Ellie in the more inviting post Friends Thursday 8:30 p.m. time period. Watching Ellie is actually Julia Louis-Dreyfus' fourth regularly scheduled series role. From 1982-85 she was a regular on NBC's Saturday Night Live, from 1988-89 she was featured in NBC sitcom Day by Day (opposite former Knots landing co-star Doug Sheehan) and in 1990 she began her long-running stint as Elaine on NBC's Seinfeld.

With:- JULIA LOUISE-DREYFUS as Ellie / LAUREN BOWLES / DARREN BOYD / STEVE CARRELL as Edgar

WAYNE AND SHUSTER TAKE AN AFFECTIONATE LOOK AT.

CBS / 1965

Documentary. Canadian comedians Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster look at the careers of various comedians and entertainers.

THE WAYNE BRADY SHOW

ABC / x30m-e / 2001 (First Episode Broadcast: 8 August)

Variety. Although it's easy to initially think of new variety/sketch comedy series The Wayne Brady Show as a throwback to summer debuts of yesteryear like The Hudson Brothers Show, Shields and Yarnell and The Ken Berry "Wow" Show, this is a laugh-out loud half-hour . With supporting players, an onstage orchestra, celebrity guests (Justin Timberlake in episode one) and a slew of regular dancers in an arena where Brady actually takes questions from the audience the only thing missing is a tug on the ear a la Carol Burnett at the end of the show. And while it's unfair to assume Wayne and his comedic repertoire will revive the once prosperous variety genre, kudos to ABC for giving this a shot. Consider The Wayne Brady Show a much funnier entry the comedian's other primetime series, Whose Line is it Anyway? - Marc Berman.
