Adventure series chronicling adventures of French naval officer and adventurer Henry de Monfreid at the turn of the 20th Century.

BAREN

Sweden / TV1 / x30m-e / 2000-2002

Docusoap in the mould of Big Brother initially popular but with two seasons a year and six shows per week a certain amount of overkill developed. Winner of the final season was Daniel Hansen. The show was at first set in the heart of Stockholm but was later moved to Alby, a suburb with a bad reputation, 30 minutes from Stockholm by subway.

 

THE BIBLE

ITALY-USA / Lux Vide s.p.a. production - Lube-Raiuno- Turner / 1992-93

An anthology series of feature length and mostly two part adaptions of

Bible stories. The works adapted included:- Genesis, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Samson and Delilah, Solomon, David, Esther, Jesus and Jeremiah  . The casts featured mainly European and English talent with some big American names also appearing.

 

BIG BROTHER

Holland / x60m-e / 1999-continuing

Game show with voyeuristic tendencies in which ten people were locked in a house doing everyday things. Each week the viewing audience voted to get rid of one of the ten until one remained - that person then winning a cash prize. The contestants in the first run, who included Bart Spring in't Veld and Sabine Wendell immediately became media darlings. 

 

BLACK FOREST CLINIC

Medical drama series. Stories of the staff and patients of the hospital of the title. Suave surgeon Professor Klaus Brinkmann was in charge of the Clinic and had a somewhat stormy relationship with his doctor son Udo. The show was one of West Germany's mpst popular series ever. Original German title: Die Schwarzwaldklinik.

DINOSAUR WAR -AIZENBORG

Scifi? Surreal dinosaur fighting adventure series with the original Japanese title being Kyoryo Senso - Takakae! Redo Taiga. In 1978-79 the same company made a very similar series of 52x30m-e called Dinosaur Fighting Team Koseidon.

FRANKENSTEIN UNE HISTOIRE D'AMOUR

Horror drama. A mad professor creates a monster, a typically French production in that the face of the Monster is never revealed.

THE GERMAN GAMBIT

A documentary with some dramatised segments made to commemorate the 10th anniversary of German unity and looking at the politics leading to the opening of the East and West German border.

 

GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES

Mainland Europe's first daily soap style series, this was actually based on an Australian original called The Restless Years. It's original Dutch title is Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden. In 1992 a German version called Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten appeared.

THE HAROLD SCHMIDT SHOW

Period drama serial. Life for the residents of the German village of Sabbach between the years 1919 and 1982. It took Reitz five years and four months to complete this semi-autobiographical portrait of his own childhood in this hilly region between Frankfurt and Saarbruecken. The performances are outstanding, indeed, emotionally moving and credible down to the last word and gesture. Shot over two years, with 28 leading performs, 140 speaking roles and 5,000 non-professional actors. A 26 hour sequel followed called The Second Heimat:A New Generation. Although the second Heimat is not a direct continuation of the first HEIMAT (which roughly translated means "homeland"), its lead character, Hermann Simon (played by Henry Arnold), was featured in the original

Game show. The original version of It's A Knockout with madcap games galore involving teams getting dressed up in wacky costumes and taking part in physical challenges.

 

ISIDINGO - THE NEED

Isidingo - The Need is South Africa's most popular show and concerns itself with detailing the lives of a mining community (Horizon Deep Mining), looking at all the multicultural aspects of the New South Africa and featuring subjects like racism, murder, action and romantic entanglements. The location used for the show is the Durban Roodeport Gold Mine and the title for the show came from a competition launched by SABC3 (the programme makers) in 1998.

LOFT STORY

France / M6-ASP-Endemol / x30m-e / 2001 (First Episode: 15 May)

A game show very Big Brother hosted by Benjamin Castaldi in style but with the sex angle played up more with 6 men and five women cooped up together ina loft style apartment (all aged in their twenties) the contestants had to try and couple up and the man and woman left at the end of 70 days confinement (the others having been voted off by both their roommates and the TV viewers) stood to win £30,000. At the beginning, they do not know each other. Filmed around the clock by 26 cameras and having to cope without telephone, newspapers, radio nor television, they have to organize their everyday life, with kitchen garden and hen house in this " loft ", in fact built in a studio of the Plain-Saint-Denis. Over 38,000 people applied to go on the show. The eleven contendors were Laure, Julie, Kenza, Kimy (who replaced very very early walkout Delphine), Loana, Christophe, J. Edouard, Fabrice, Aziz (first to go), Steevy and Phillipe.

 

THE LONG JOURNEY OF LUKAS B.

Period drama serial. Prussia in the spring 1865: After the death of his mother and the imprisonment of his father 13 year old Lukas Bienmann travels to America to start a new life. When his father escapes he joins him in the USA.
