The premiere episode of legal drama Newton’s Law airs on Thursday 9th February at 8.30pm on ABC.
After the brilliant but beleaguered Josephine Newton finds her office set alight, she agrees to return to the Bar, only to discover that she must defend an associate accused of murder.
Josephine’s (Claudia Karvan) a woman in motion – and on a collision course . When the barrister on her pyromania case falls asleep in court, losing the case, and the client subsequently burns down her solicitor’s office, Josephine is lured back to the Bar by seductive, clever Lewis (Toby Schmitz) – a man who, up until now, she’s intelligently avoided. Josephine is forced to leave behind her lame ducks – an alleged embezzler and a car thief – when she joins the prestigious Knox Chambers and takes on her first case in fifteen years: defending a Knox Chambers associate Craig Allen (Will Ewing) accused of killing the man who previously occupied her new chambers.
As Josephine attempts to unravel the suspect circumstances surrounding the death, she’s badgered by her self-absorbed sister, Rose (Freya Stafford) a teenage daughter, Lydia (Ella Newton) and her husband, Callum (Brett Tucker) who hasn’t quite grasped the meaning of the word ‘separation’.
After some canny investigative work and an unorthodox defence strategy that shocks the courtroom, Josephine’s memorable return to the Bar is complete. Well, almost, there’s just the small matter of securing a new office space for her lame ducks and the former car wash downstairs might be just the place to hide them in plain sight.
