Not far from Birmingham’s downtown, in the neighbourhood of Ladywood, Ed moves in with a local who has spent the last 20 years in a high-rise apartment. He’s a family man with kids and grandkids, but he tells Ed he wouldn’t want to be a teenager in this part of Birmingham now that youth services have been slashed by more than 80 percent since 2010. Ed also meets a former working mother of three who is now claiming benefits and using food pantries because of the high unemployment rate in Birmingham and the accompanying cost of living crisis.

With more than one million households on England’s social housing waiting list, according to Shelter England’s social housing deficit campaign, filmmaker Ed Stafford moves into some of the UK’s most troubled housing estates for 60 days and nights, to look beyond the tabloid headlines and experience first-hand the daily hardships that locals face.
