Shelter England’s social housing deficit campaign estimates that over a million English households are currently waiting for social housing, so filmmaker Ed Stafford spends 60 days and nights in some of the UK’s most troubled housing estates to investigate the situation beyond the sensationalised headlines.

Ed sees the communities and charities working together despite the odds to better these neighbourhoods, from the reality of parents having to choose between food and heating to the reality of drug addiction, gang violence, and people being afraid to go outside.

In this first episode, Ed visits a single mother and her three sets of twins, all under the age of 11, who live in a damp and draughty one-bedroom council flat in Northumberland Park, north London. Even though one of her kids has asthma, she has been trying to relocate for years with no luck.

Ed also meets a 45-year-old local who began using crack at the age of seventeen. He is now drug-free but struggles to maintain sobriety while living alone in a housing cooperative flat. In addition, Ed is disturbed to learn that children as young as 13 are still being drawn into the area’s dark underbelly of gun and knife crime.

With more than one million households on England’s social housing waiting list, according to Shelter England’s social housing deficit campaign, filmmaker Ed Stafford moves into some of the UK’s most troubled housing estates for 60 days and nights, to look beyond the tabloid headlines and experience first-hand the daily hardships that locals face.
