Radio Free Europe – As Russia has invaded Ukraine, Radio Free Europe, once considered a relic of the Cold War, has become an essential tool in the fight against deception and authoritarianism in the present day. The $140 million annual budget of RFE is supported by American taxpayers and was recently increased by bipartisan action in Congress. Bill Whitaker travels to the headquarters of RFE in Prague to meet the courageous journalists responsible for the organization’s gutsy reporting.
The Vanishing Wild – Scientists are ringing the alarm that the sixth mass extinction is currently occurring on Earth. The last one occurred 66 million years ago, when an asteroid slammed the Yucatan peninsula and extinguished the dinosaurs. According to their calculations, the next major shift in Earth’s environment will occur in just 20 years. Scott Pelley discusses a pressing global issue with leading thinkers who provide potential answers.
Obesity – After tobacco use, obesity is the largest avoidable cause of death in the United States. Lesley Stahl investigates the high cost and limited availability of a new weight-loss medicine.

60 Minutes has been on the air since 1968, beginning on a Tuesday, but spending most of its time on Sundays, where it remains today. This popular news magazine provides both hard hitting investigations, interviews and features, along with people in the news and current events. 60 Minutes has set unprecedented records in the Nielsen’s ratings with a number 1 rating, five times, making it among the most successful TV programs in all of television history. This series has won more Emmy awards than any other news program and in 2003, Don Hewitt, the creator (back in 1968), was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Emmy, along with the 60 Minute correspondents. Added to the 11 Peabody awards, this phenomenally long-lived series has collected 78 awards up to the 2005 season and remains among the viewers top choice for news magazine features.
