A Kind of Spark “The Spark” (BBC iPlayer Friday 31 March 2023)
A Kind of Spark airs a new episode tonight Friday 31 March 2023 on BBC iPlayer.
“The Spark” Based on the best-selling novel by neurodivergent author Elle McNicoll, the live-action series A Kind of Spark is powerful and heartwarming.
Addie, a neurodivergent young girl, has an inspiring story to tell. When Addie hears about the Juniper witch trials that occurred centuries ago, she realises that both the ‘witches’ and her own narrative are more complicated than they initially appear.
Her search for identity becomes intertwined with the 16th-century mystery of Maggie and Elinor. While Elinor fought to be herself, Maggie was accused of witchcraft and vanished before she could stand trial.
Addie begins on a voyage of self-discovery while advocating for a memorial to Maggie and Elinor as she attempts to piece together what happened to them.
Despite her sister Keedie’s best efforts to prepare and protect her, Addie confronts immediate problems in the first episode, “The Spark,” despite her optimism and excitement about the new school year.
Her best friend Jenna has elected to sit with someone else, and her new teacher, Miss Murphy, seems off in some way. Her new classroom is in a different school building, which is a sensory minefield.
After learning about the witch trials that occurred in her village, Addie feels overwhelmed on a field trip into the woods. She identifies strongly with the ladies who were persecuted for their differences and is perplexed that her peers aren’t more outraged by what happened.
Addie discovers an odd witch jar on her run. It’s the beginning of a journey that will change your life forever, one that includes friends, foes, and a mystery that must be solved.
The BBC iPlayer will begin streaming “A Kind of Spark” on March 31.
