Ambulance: Season 9 Premiere (S9EP1 BBC One Thurs 11 August 2022)
As the North East struggles to recover from one of its toughest periods in its history, the Bafta-winning series focuses on the North East Ambulance Service. There are more than 2.7 million people served by the service.
Tom, a dispatcher, starts his seven-mile walk to work at the beginning of the day shift. He thinks back on his career path from the now-closed mines where he worked to the ambulance service. A call for a patient experiencing chest pain comes in as crews begin to sign up for the 12-hour shift. The patient and his family are refugees from Iraq who have been in the UK for just 17 days, according to Sophie and Jack, who are sent off right away. Both the male patient, who is suffering as a result of the trauma he has undergone, and his wife, who is seven months pregnant with twins, are in need of care.
Every 17 seconds, a new call is answered in the control room. Due to the high demand, the service has implemented a no-send policy, which limits the use of ambulances to the most serious medical emergencies. The first patient of the day is a woman with chest pain, and crewmates and life partners Kyle and Alex are sent to help her. The patient has experienced anxiety due to the recent death of her mother. Alex is forced to think about how she will manage without her immediate family because she left them in Cyprus as a result of the case.
Crewmates Gemma and Katie are sent to a traffic accident on the road, which dramatically changes the course of the shift. Numerous calls are being received at the same time about a second traffic accident outside of a school. A motorbike has knocked down a young boy. The crew worries that his injuries could be traumatic because he is not responding.
A social worker who is worried about the welfare of a male patient who is ill and hasn’t eaten in three days calls in the meantime. The patient hasn’t left his bed in four years, Kyle and Alex discover. His living situation makes it clear that he and his wife are having a hard time getting by.
The refugee family Sophie and Jack looked after earlier in the shift is the focus of their final check-in as the shift comes to a close.
Behind the sirens are these actual human stories.
