Budgie: The Jump Up Boys (ITV 12 May 1972, with Derek Newark)

In The Jump Up Boys Detective Inspector Bryant has put together a major team together, he is determined to bring London to heel and has Charlie Endell in his sights. He arranges for the none too bright Constable Leadbetter to tail him.

Meanwhile Budgie bumps into old mate and fellow crook Grogan, he has the perfect idea for a scam and is more than happy to let Budgie in on it.

The episode carries more than a few echoes of previous Budgie season one episodes. Rio Fanning who plays Grogan had appeared in Out, the very first episode of Budgie, Jack Shepherd is back as Detective Constable Leadbetter (he also appeared in A Pair of Charlies) and Derek Newark who plays Inspector Bryant had appeared in season one finale And In Again as the cop determined to send Budgie down.

Derek Newark was also given a two page interview in the weeks TV Times, the most interesting fact that was revealed about this tough guy actor was that he had written a play, Something About A Soldier, based on a homosexual experience he had in the Merchant Navy as a young man.
