The Gladiatrix: The audience is treated to a unique spectacle when the mighty Emperor Trajan hosts his grand games in 107 AD: female gladiators. Normally, the players are POWs, but in one match, a Roman woman by the name of Mevia makes history. She makes the controversial and shocking decision to give up her status as a free citizen of Rome in order to compete as a gladiator, earning the wrath of Juvenal, a satirist and historian of ancient Rome. Her decision serves as an example of the difficulties plebian life presented to Roman women.
