Comedy Playhouse: The Chars (BBC 1963, Doris Waters, Elsie Waters)

Published

on

Single entry in the Comedy Playhouse strand The Chars focused on the exploits of two charladies working at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The writers Rosenthal and Driver were both working on Coronation Street at the time of this one off comedy and the stars sisters Elsie and Doris Waters (who were actually the sisters of hugely popular Jack Warner) had had a long and varied career in radio, cinema and the music hall but never really found a TV vehicle that suited their style.

The supporting cast had a couple of interesting names in it too with the likes of Dad’s Army’s James Beck and Derek Nimmo.
