Crocodile Shoes: The Call (S1EP6 BBC One 22 Dec 1994)

The Call: Jed’s first single “Calling Out Your Name” is readied for release but following the Carmell Cantrell debacle in Nashville is finding it hard to get airplay for it, he persuades Jed to play some afternoon gigs with a cabaret band and is a little put out to bump into his old workmates who, having won quite a bit of money with their racehorse, have gone to London for a drunken weekend.

Meanwhile things are reaching crisis point for Ade, Caroline is busy trying to get her own back on him by making a play for Jed and the injured Snotter has finally tracked him down, he is pointing a loaded gun at Ade when Jed returns to the apartment…

A mixed bag of a final episode, it really doesn’t look like Jed’s dream of music success is going to happen, the confrontation between Ade and Caroline is the final straw for him and he is thinking of heading back home to Newcastle. There is a great coda though with Jed having saved Ade from Snotter making it plain that he is heading home, he walks out of the cafe where they are having a cup of tea only for his song (which has now entered the charts) to come on the radio.

Also worth mentioning is the nicely understated performance from Christopher Fairbank who shares several key scenes with Jed in both this episode and the one before it and never for one moment do you think of “Moxey” (the role he played along side Jimmy Nail in Auf Wiedersehen Pet).
