Crocodile Shoes: The Tape (S1EP1 BBC One 10 Nov 1994)

The Tape: Steelworker Jed Shepperd is living in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne with his sister Emma (although it’s Jed’s house) and although times are tough and there is the threat of the factory where he works closing up shop Jed harbours dreams of making it as a musician. Unbeknownst to Jed, Emma has sent off a tape off his country tinged songs to some London record companies. One of the tapes lands up on the desk of Ade Lynn who is definitely going through a fallow patch (in fact most of his colleagues think he is washed up and his boss Rex is considering letting him go). Ade is convinced that Jed definitely has something and decides he could be his ticket to the managerial big time. He decides the time is right to get one over on Tomboy Records and take Jed with him.

A good opener, right from the beginning Ade is shown to have few redeeming qualities, his drug fueled lifestyle is on the verge of making him lose everything whilst it contrasts with the hard working world of Jed, up at “sparrow’s fart” to work in the steel factory as a lathe operator. As soon as Ade hears Jed’s tape he realises he could be on to something but seeking a way out of Tomboy decides to play a dangerous game and go it alone. The soon to be major Alex Kingston co-stars as Ade’s girlfriend who is also having an affair with his boss Rex (and telling him all Ade’s plans into the bargain!).
