Daisy Maskell: Insomnia and Me airs Monday 2 October 2023 on BBC Three.
What is this episode about
Daisy Maskell, the youngest breakfast radio host in the UK, has had trouble sleeping ever since she was a kid. Since she was a child, she has been able to function on as little as two hours of sleep per night, staying up until the wee hours of the morning. Daisy’s exhaustion from her growing to-do list motivates her to investigate the causes of her sleeplessness and initiate treatment.
She has support from others, too. The number of young people admitted to hospitals because of sleep disorders has nearly doubled over the past eight years, according to NHS research, and the recent Covid-19 crisis has only made matters worse. Nearly half of respondents aged 16 to 24 in a study of 2,500 people from across the UK by Kings College London reported sleeping significantly fewer hours than they had before the lockdown, compared to only a third of respondents aged 35 and older.
Daisy talks to doctors and other people in her situation to learn more about the prevalence of sleep problems among young people in the UK. She learns from her experiences and tries various treatments and remedies in an effort to improve her sleep. She delves deeply into the personal struggles that have contributed to her insomnia, revealing raw, emotional insights.
