Derry Girls: The Real Derry: Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (S3EP Channel 4 Thursday 16 June 2022)

The Real Derry: Jamie-Lee O’Donnell: With warmth, wit and honesty, Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell shares her hopes and fears for the future of her beloved home city of Derry as she discovers what life is like for young people growing up in Derry today. Derry is a unique place with a distinctive accent and sense of humour, but as Jamie-Lee scratches beneath the surface, it’s clear that 30 years of the Troubles have left a heavy mark on the city and its people.

Preparing to take part in a special commemoration event marking the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday triggers painful memories for Jamie-Lee, as she reflects on her own childhood experiences of growing up in a community where fear was everywhere. Sixth form students in Jamie-Lee’s old school explain what it’s like living in a city where Catholics and Protestants are still mostly segregated, and that they feel affected by the legacy of the past, despite Northern Ireland being a more peaceful place since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Jamie-Lee heads to a familiar part of town for a night out with her Derry Girls co-star Saoirse-Monica Jackson, but steps out of her comfort zone to meet members of a Protestant flute band in a hall decorated with Union Jack flags.

Season 3 Episode

16-year-old Erin Quinn lives with her uncompromising mother, her long-suffering father and the fearsome ‘Granda Joe’, a man whose love for his daughters and granddaughters is surpassed only by his contempt for his son-in-law.

It’s the early 90s, and Erin is used to seeing her country on the nightly news and speaking in acronyms (The IRA, The UDA, The RUC). This is a time of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points. But it’s also the time of Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, MJ and Lisa Marie, Doc Martens, bomber jackets, The X Files, Nirvana and Wayne’s World. And while The Troubles may hang over her home town, Erin has troubles of her own
