Dr. Phil Today Friday January 13, 2023, on CBS. When their children break the law, should parents be held accountable? Should the prosecution offer these minors support services rather than release them to the community without consequence or incarceration? Is it beneficial or detrimental to put a youngster in jail?
Santiago claims that his son Bryce was responsible for killing a police officer and crashing into a house, but Bryce has never been arrested or even prosecuted. If his son doesn’t face consequences for his acts, Santiago believes, the system is broken and his son will be killed or end up dead.
Ashley alleges she has the inverse problem with the system, that her son is being incarcerated for non-criminal offences such as minor behavioural difficulties. Michelle feels the law failed her as a mother because it did nothing to aid her son while he was a kid, and now that he is an adult, he is being locked away.
Pacific Juvenile Defenders Center’s Director of Policy Alisa Blair disagrees that putting kids in jail is good for them. Mo Canady, a former cop, and Melisa Powers, a judge, both said that they look at using school resources first before putting a kid behind bars, but that it happens.
