Endurance: Race to the Pole with Ben Fogle: Series Premiere airs Monday 2 October 2023 on Channel 5.

What is this episode about

Brand new three-part documentary series that follows polar explorers Ben Fogle and Dwayne Fields as they relive the perils of the early 20th-century race to the pole. Like their Edwardian heroes Scott, Shackleton, and Amundsen, Ben and Dwayne dress the part, eat the fare, and pack the same way. Some of the defining moments that led to Amundsen’s first pole landing, Shackleton’s maturation into a seasoned polar explorer, and Robert Falcon Scott’s untimely death on the return journey are experienced by the characters. There is tragedy, danger, and genuine heroes in this tale.

When we first meet our heroes, it is 1901, and the Great Age of Antarctic Exploration has just begun. Captain Robert Falcon Scott volunteered to lead the British “Discovery” Expedition to Antarctica for three years in the hopes of finding the South Pole. His expedition is one of the best-funded and -prepared of all time, and it features a new face in the form of Ernest Shackleton.

We watch as Ben and Dwayne arrive in Antarctica and immediately shed their modern polar explorer garb for those of their Edwardian ancestors.

In a matter of days, they will be setting out on their own journey, recreating key moments from that first attempt at the pole down to the smallest detail in the form of equipment and rations. Scott and Shackleton tried using dogs to aid them, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. Since non-native animals are no longer permitted in Antarctica, Ben and Dwayne must revert to traditional man-hauling methods, pulling a wooden ‘Nansen’ sledge loaded with all the supplies they will need for their stay. It’s exhausting and tedious to build a replica tent from scratch, but the real challenge will come when they set it up on the barren ice fields for the first time.

They intend to share rations, eating the traditional polar dish of “Hoosh” twice a day. This dish is a fatty stew made from dried beef, rendered beef fat, and rock-hard ships biscuits, and it is prepared by mashing all of these ingredients into melted snow.

Scott made heroic attempts to reach the South Pole, and he did so, setting a new world record for the farthest South any person had ever gone into the heart of Antarctica (then known as Terra Incognita), but he was forced to abandon his expedition many hundreds of kilometres from the Pole.
