Eurovision Song Contest: Eurovision Calling: Jason and Chelcee’s Ultimate Guide airs Monday 8 May 2023 on BBC One
Comedian Jason Manford and singer-songwriter Chelcee Grimes discuss the rise of the Eurovision Song Contest to the status of the world’s largest live music event, drawing crowds comparable to the American Superbowl and launching the careers of countless international stars.
To better understand what makes a Eurovision hit, Jason meets the United Kingdom’s most recent winner, Katrina Leskanich of Katrina and the Waves, who won in 1997, as well as Sam Ryder, who placed second in 2022, and Mae Muller, who will represent the United Kingdom in Liverpool in 2023.
Meanwhile, Liverpool-born singer-songwriter Chelcee gives an inside look at the event’s preparations and reveals some previously unknown details. Did you know that Abba originally planned to sing Waterloo in Swedish at the 1974 finals, but changed their minds at the last minute? Chelcee also goes to Sweden to learn more about the contest’s popularity there.
Three generations of the same Newcastle family share their appreciation for the contest with Jason, and a group of LGBTQ+ fans in Manchester share the profound effect the competition has had on their lives.
