Stephanie March, a reporter for Foreign Correspondent, and producer/cinematographer Matt Davis travelled to Somalia and encountered terrorist organization al-Shabaab.

Somalia has been afflicted by two decades of conflict with the al-Qaeda supported extremist group, al-Shabaab, and it has had a devastating impact on the nation. The country is now contending with its worst drought in 40 years, but with the world’s attention largely focused elsewhere, the crisis is escalating with little public awareness.

This week on Foreign Correspondent, March and Davis traveled to Somalia where makeshift camps have become a refuge for over a million starving children and their families. There, they encountered mothers with infants who had trekked for days without food or water. Despite the harsh and perilous surroundings, the team also heard accounts of impressive acts of bravery and resilience. Yet, they also faced their own security concerns, with suspicions raised over whether al-Shabaab had been informed of their location by their security team.

As the Somali government pushes back against al-Shabaab, an additional danger, which they have no influence on, is giving rise to the harsh weather: climate change. Amidst this turmoil, the team from Foreign Correspondent encountered exceptional individuals who are determined to transform their story into one of survival.
