Taiwan, a small island nation, is in a precarious position as it is caught between the rivalling nuclear superpowers of China and the United States.Many people worry that it will be ground zero for the next major international conflict.

The president of Taiwan has insisted that his country must keep its independence and democracy in the face of China’s insistence that Taiwan reunify with the mainland.
