Fred Dibnah's Building of Britain

Fred Dibnah’s Building of Britain: Mighty Cathedrals airs Thursday 25 May 2023 on BBC Four.

Fred examines the Normans’ extensive construction effort in the 11th century, which yielded such impressive fortress cathedrals as Ely and Peterborough.

Fred reveals the stone arch as the secret weapon available to Norman builders and shows how the first stonemasons built them at Peterborough Cathedral. At Ely, Fred ascends to the upper levels of the structure to study the renovations and additions made by later constructors. Fred climbs rooftop ladders to take a closer look at the amazing octagonal lantern that was built in the 14th century—a marvel of early engineering. Fred also knows the ins and outs of how this remarkable accomplishment was made.

Fred travels to Rochester, but instead of visiting the cathedral there, he explores a Norman castle. Here, he shows how the methods employed by attackers centuries ago to try to destroy tall towers are eerily similar to the methods he used to bring down such structures.
