Fred examines the Middle Ages and the adaptation of an Englishman’s castle into a home as part of his quest to learn about the craftsmanship and engineering that went into the construction of Britain.
Fred travels to Stokesey Castle, England’s oldest moated and fortified house, to examine the ‘jettying’ technique used to enlarge the bedroom by expanding the wall between the two rooms. Fred also learns the secret to building massive arched roofs out of timber.
Fred visits Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, one of the best examples of English timber-framed architecture, and shows how the buildings were built by carpenters in the 15th and 16th centuries. Fred’s travels conclude at Harvington Hall, a mansion near Kidderminster known for its exquisite priest holes, which were constructed by master carpenter Nicholas Owen during the reign of Elizabeth I.
