Game of Thrones: Season 8 Episode 3 (HBO Sun 28 Apr 2019)

Last week’s stellar episode A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms saw a gathering of all the major players (bar Cersei) at King’s Landing waiting for the arrival of the Night King and his ever growing hoarde of the undead. The episode closed with the Night King and co finally having Winterfell in their sights.

This episode, which runs for a mammoth 85 minutes, promises to be the biggest episode of the series ever. It’s highly likely that the whole episode will concern itself with the ultimate battle against the legions of the undead. Bran aka The Three Eyed Raven believes the Night King wants him and suggested using himself as bait but however it plays out there is every chance that many of favorite characters may not make it out alive.

Given that this is only episode 3 it does suggest that the living will win out against the dead. Our personal fave theory is that the dead of Winterfell, the ancestral statues in the crypt (which lets face it has featured prominently throughout the series) will play a major part in defeating the Night King. Something noticed by Song of Fire and Ice Blogger Steven Atwelle who said “I don’t think the Starks of ages past, so focused on the coming of winter, buried their dead with iron swords because they were stupid men.” This theory would also tie in with the books, in A Game of Thrones Jon dreamed of “dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves.”

Obviously if the living do triumph then the rest of the episodes will concern themselves with who will eventually remain on the Iron Throne.

Airdate: Sunday 28 April 2019 from 9.00pm-10.25pm on HBO.
