Grand Designs: The Streets: Season 3 Premiere airs Tuesday 16 May 2023 on Channel 4.
Local governments across the United Kingdom are inspired by Graven Hill, the country’s largest mass self-build site, due to the site’s innovative and daring architecture. Brave self-builders have been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to construct their wildest imaginings all over the British Isles.
In the third season, Kevin McCloud and co-host Natasha Huq revisit previous ambitious self-builds in Graven Hill and Glasgow, as well as track the progress of some of these groundbreaking new projects. Each story illustrates the sense of togetherness that these streets foster as well as the grit, fortitude, and aspiration of their architects and planners.
This week, two families in Yorkshire, each with their own unique goals in mind, are making the decision to embark on a self-build project. Problems arise when Nicola’s spectacular triangular window, the focal point of her design for a modern take on the classic red-brick family home, doesn’t fit.
Just down the street is Matt and Maryellen’s bright and textured Brazilian-themed home with a butterfly roof. Despite Maryellen’s reservations, steelworker Matt is eager to incorporate his favourite material wherever possible. Matt wants a gothic black bathroom, while Maryellen favours a glamorous white one, just one example of their divergent tastes in the house.
