Grand Tours of Scotland's Rivers

Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers: A Bountiful River airs Monday 15 May 2023 on BBC Two.

Paul travels down the Spey River, Scotland’s third longest river and a popular destination for tourists due to its proximity to forests, whisky distilleries, and salmon fishing. Along the way, Paul learns about the loggers who floated timber down the river beginning in the 17th century. Then he takes a canoe out on the water and comes across some rare freshwater mussels, whose pearls were once used to adorn royal crowns but are now in danger of extinction.

Paul reaches the mouth of the Spey, where shipyards once launched vessels to sail the seven seas, and he drinks a dram of the original water of life. Paul tracks down the last salmon net fisherman on the river and learns how the fish were caught using nets and then transported to London using ice.
