What is this episode about
Michael Portillo travels by rail across 1930s Britain, stopping at Newcastle, Loch Ness, and finally Falkirk in Scotland. The Westerglen Transmitting Station, which he finds here, is where the analogue radio signal is still broadcasted to the Scottish borders.
“Riviera of the Highlands” is what Michael finds when he follows the path of the former Caledonian Railway Company. As the headquarters of the British School of Falconry and a popular tourist destination with a direct train service to Kings Cross every day, Gleneagles continues to draw many. I am prepared to take flight, Hamish the Harris hawk.
After Blairgowrie, Michael will go to Berry Town. Michael discovers the ins and outs of picking raspberries at the birthplace of the Scottish raspberry industry, which provided a daily fruit supply to London via a raspberry special service that departed from Cooper Angus station.
Dundee, the birthplace of jute, jam, and journalism, is the final destination on this section. Michael will be met at publisher DC Thomson by a comic hero with black and red stripes, much beloved by children of the 1930s.
