Great Coastal Railway Journeys: St Bees to Maryport airs Friday 26 May 2023 on BBC Two.

During the final leg of his train trip around England’s northwest coast, Michael meets a longtime reader of Alfred Wainwright’s popular guidebooks and embarks on the first leg of his coast-to-coast journey.

Michael travels to Whitehaven, the third busiest port in Britain, to meet with a butcher whose family has been making Cumberland sausages the same way they have for 100 years. He travels inland to Cockermouth, where he finds out that the River Derwent, which runs past Wordsworth House’s garden, was one of the poet’s favourite places.

In Maryport, on the border between England and Scotland, the Solway Firth sweeps in big fish for the fishermen who still use traditional haaf nets. Michael’s journey comes to an end here.
