This six-part true crime serial gives a minute-by-minute account of the 2002 Washington, D.C. sniper case – one of the most terrifying crimes in recent history. Lee Malvo, the surviving shooter, is heard in a series of phone calls from his Supermax cell at Red Onion State Prison in Virginia, where he is in solitary confinement.

Featuring a wealth of testimony from victims, survivors, families and investigators, the series tells how a chance meeting between a vulnerable Jamaican teenager and a disaffected Army veteran set in motion a murderous road trip and how a chain of events led them to commit unthinkable acts of violence. Told from many angles, this definitive account of a shocking American crime story examines how Malvo came to be a mass murderer at the age of just 17.

In episode one, we are introduced to Lee Malvo at age 16, when he took the life of young mother Keenya Cook. It’s February 2002 in Tacoma, Washington. She is Malvo’s first murder victim, shot point blank by Malvo as a rite of passage, signalling the beginning of a devastating process of transformation and indoctrination which led Lee Malvo and John Muhammad along the path of homicidal violence. ‘That was just the beginning,’ says Malvo. ‘And once that ball starts rolling down the mountain, there’s no stopping it.

Over the course of our travels, Muhammad and I did some very bad things. Some terrible things. Muhammad was master puppeteer. I was the instrument. A ghoul. I was a thief. I stole people’s lives.’ It’s October 2002 and Muhammad now knows that his protégé is ready – ready to embark on the killing spree he has planned for the capital city of the world’s most powerful nation.

Airdate: Monday 24 January 2022 at 10.00pm on Channel 4.
