In the second episode of In Our Blood David and Jeremy are reevaluating their strategy in light of the rising AIDS crisis.
The situation becomes more difficult when a blood bank in Sydney refuses donations from ‘promiscuous’ gay men. People are outraged by the prospect of receiving potentially tainted blood, and homophobia rises dramatically as a result.
Deb, Tim, Liam, and Michelle are among the grassroots organisations in the gay community providing hotlines, in-home care, and counselling to people who need it. When Deb and Michelle pick up an ill guy they find lying on the sidewalk, they begin to grasp the gravity of the issue.Since the LGBT community is already taking measures to protect its members, David concludes that the government should give those communities responsibility for their own peer-to-peer education. Their flyers may be shocking to some (even obscene), but they are clearly targeting the right demographic.
After meeting with activists and conducting his own research, Jeremy is persuaded that this is the best course of action, but he needs the backing of a majority of lawmakers in order to funnel taxpayer funds to potentially criminal organisations.
