During restrictive periods in Chinese history, when many women were denied the right to education, ladies would fold fans and handkerchiefs to hide letters written in the once-secret written language of Nüshu. Two contemporary women seeking refuge from oppression turn to Nüshu, where they explore links between classical Chinese femininity and modern feminism.
