Princess Diana’s death in a car crash in 1997 shocked the world and ignited a global debate about how and why she died. Was it a car accident? Or was she killed by the British establishment to prevent a possible Muslim stepfather to the heir to the throne? This four-part documentary series takes these questions as its starting point, telling for the first time the story of the two police investigations into her death.

Episode one follows the immediate aftermath of the crash that killed Diana, Dodi Al-Fayed and their driver Henri Paul. France’s elite Brigade Criminelle, led by its indomitable female chief Martine Monteil, is first on the crash scene in Paris on August 31, 1997.

What appears a straightforward car crash soon becomes a high-stakes operation when one of the passengers is revealed to be the most famous woman in the world.

The French detectives chase every lead, manoeuvring between unreliable witnesses and fallible memories while trying to block out the countless conspiracy theories that spring up almost immediately in the press and on the burgeoning internet.

Episode two is on Channel 4 tomorrow night.

Airdate: Sunday 21 August 2022 at 9.00pm on Channel 4.
