Today Monday 20 March 2023, there is a new episode of Jonathan Ross’ Myths and Legends.
Episode 2 Jonathan travels to Wales, a mysterious land where legends and folklore abound with tales of hidden monsters. Starting his trek up Snowdon on a steam train, he learns the mountain’s origin tale and how the dragon came to represent Wales. He also finds out that the mountain is the final resting place of the giant Rhita Gawr.
On his way to the old town of Conwy, Jonathan runs with Welsh singers Gwyneth Glyn and Twm Morys, whose song tells the tale of a frightening beast that formerly roamed the rivers and lakes. Along his southern journey, Jonathan stops by the mighty Harlech Castle, setting of the oldest Welsh myth, the tragic tale of Princess Branwen.
On the way to learning about the Lady of the Lake, one of the most well-known Welsh stories, Jonathan stops for some traditional Welsh rarebit on the banks of Llyn y Fan Fach in the Brecon Beacons, where he is joined by actor Michael Sheen.
Jonathan’s time in Wales comes to a close with the Green Man Festival, a festival of music, folk tales, and the Green Man himself, which has a maze built in the likeness of one of the oldest beings in folklore.
