Love Story: Cinema Vérité (S5EP2 ITV Thurs 13 Jul 1967, John Gregson Alexis Kanner)

In Cinema Vérité documentary film maker Colin (Alexis Kanner) pays a visit to the Spanish retreat of renowned film director R.G. Bishop (John Gregson) to make a film about the directors current life. Bishop had retired somewhat prematurely from the screen and is living in luxury with his actress wife Isabel (Valerie French). Colin knows there are secrets to be uncovered and uses Isabel to get at them.

Of the leads John Gregson of course had had a long and successful film career, by this stage he was winding down his career and was mostly working in TV. Alexis Kanner had a few good supporting roles during the 1960’s but his film and TV career had fizzled out somewhat by the early 1970’s. Valerie French’s career had begun brightly in the early 1950’s and by 1954 she was in Hollywood looking at a film career, this episode of Love Story marked her return to UK TV and film. Here career then switched between the UK and the US. Other familiar faces in the cast included Brian Wilde and Donald Sumpter.

Cinema Vérité as a term was very in vogue at the time, documentary makers were really starting to embrace the fly on the wall technique. It’s literal translation in English is Truthful Cinema.
