Love Story: Spilt Champagne (S7EP3 ITV Tues 17 Dec 1968, Eric Porter, Nyree Dawn Porter)

Spilt Champagne is rather more the breakdown of a Love Story than a romance as a married couple realise they have come to the end of the road. “Last night, Saturday night and last Friday night, I was unfaithful to you…”

The TV Times of the week featured him on the cover and had an extensive four page feature/interview with star Eric Porter, focusing on the fact that he was in his forties by the time he became a household name (thanks to The Forsyte Saga in 1967), there seemed to be a little bitterness that many of his acting contemporaries achieved success ahead of him. There was also mention of his keeping his private life private and enjoying the solitary life. He did mention in passing that he ended his national service early in 1948 and suffering stress spent time in “hospital.”

Porter and his co-star here Nyree Dawn Porter (no relation) had also starred together in The Forsyte Saga.

George Maharis, the popular American star of Route 66, was the man breaking up the marriage here. He was in the UK a little in 1968, appearing in this and an episode of the anthology series Journey to the Unknown. He also appeared in the Thriller episode Death to Sister Mary in 1974.
