Love Story: Walter (Season 11 Premiere ITV Tues 20 Nov 1973, Leslie Sands, Sheila Fearn)

Love Story Walter ITV 1973 Sheila Fearn Leslie Sands

Written by Roy Minton, Walter was the opening episode of the final season of Love Story. Walter and the much younger Sally have been living together for ten years. Walter was nearly 50 when met the young, pregnant Sally. She had nowhere to go, Walter took her in, protected and loved her and loved her son like he was his own. Now Sally has fallen for another man and wants to move in with him.

As with many of the Love Story entries it’s not just about the love that Walter has for Sally either, it’s also about the love a father has for his son, even if the child is not his own biologically.

A short piece in the weeks TV Times saw Leslie Sands happy for once to be centre stage instead of his usual supporting roles, “I have always been looking in on other people’s love affairs, but in this story I am deeply involved in the action.”

Sands was an accomplished writer as well as fabulously voiced and busy actor, he contributed 7 episodes to Z Cars during the 1960’s and also wrote scripts for shows such as A Family At War, Hadleigh and Van Der Valk. Sheila Fearn is best known for her roles in George and Mildred and as Terry’s sister in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads.
