What is Episode 1 about

After spending much of his life exploring the British countryside, Matt Baker finally gets to see what rural America is like on the other side of the Atlantic. Traveling from Florida to California, Matt immerses himself in rural culture, gets up close and personal with local species, and meets the people who are responsible for maintaining the state’s world-renowned landscapes.

In this first episode, Matt travels across a section of Florida’s infrequently visited landscape, which has both rolling hills and subtropical wildness.

To begin, he goes to see a cattle farmer in Pasco County who is dedicated to preserving Florida’s farming heritage by, among other things, manually cutting sugar cane to cook into syrup using antiquated machinery and learning about the history of cowboy poetry.

After relocating to the southernmost part of Florida, Matt dives into the sole barrier reef on the American mainland to aid in the world’s largest coral reef rehabilitation project.

Matt travels through the Everglades with the Miccosukee people, who have lived there for centuries, and then heads deep into the Everglades’ forests to meet a man who is helping to rid this environment of its biggest invasive menace — Burmese pythons.
