Matt Baker’s Travels In The Country: USA – Episode 4 airs Wednesday 3 May 2023 on More4.
Matt finally makes it to the southwestern deserts. He visits Joshua Tree National Park, one of the most important ecosystems in the Mojave Desert, and offers his assistance to the team working to preserve the park’s namesake trees, which can live up to a thousand years but are in danger of extinction.
One of the many artists who are drawn to this area, he observes the potter as he gets in touch with the earth by throwing a clay vessel. Before leaving the Mojave, Matt goes on a walk into the desert to assist rangers in sealing up an old, abandoned gold mine, and he finds a surprising variety of life despite the dry climate.
He helps harvest crops on a massive 32,000-acre farm in Arizona, where he learns about the importance of the mighty Colorado River to agriculture in the desert. The sun sets, and Matt ventures out into the surrounding landscape to check out the enigmatic ‘Blythe Intaglios,’ a set of enormous figures carved into the earth that are unlike anything else in the United States.
After spending his entire life in the British countryside, Matt Baker finally gets to see what rural America is like on the other side of the Atlantic. Travelling from Florida to California, Matt immerses himself in rural culture, gets up close and personal with local wildlife, and meets the people who are working and protecting the land that produces the world’s best landscapes.
