Michael Palin: Into Iraq Premiere (SBS Wednesday 5 April 2023)

Michael Palin travels 1,000 miles into Iraq, a country he has never visited before, on an adventure of a lifetime. Lake Hazar, in eastern Turkey, is the source of the river Tigris, which Michael will follow to the Persian Gulf on the southern coast of Iraq, where he will join a train.

Michael meets a Kurdish woman named Dilan in the thriving Turkish city of Diyarbakir for a traditional meal and insight into the complicated connection that the Kurds have with the central government in Iraq. Michael continues his haphazard journey to the border by stopping in Mardin, a historic city carved into a mountainside at Iraq’s doorstep.
